On my first backpacking trip – my budget was $25/per day: max $10/stay (easy!!), $7-8 meals, the rest was transportation + entry fees. More than doable, that was exactly the way I traveled across Southeast Asia for 6 months!

  • LANGUAGE – Sri Lanka operates in 3 different languages: Sinhalese, Tamil and English – most people would understand basic English.
  • ATM’s easily accessible in banks – avoid no name ATM’s.
  • CURRENCY: Sri Lanka Rupees (LKR) – check the rates before you go, as SL currency is extremely unstable.

4. Portugal ($50-60/per day).

Portugal is a land of exceptional beauty. From the northern green highlands to limestone cliffs shaping the south coastline, Portugal is unique in taste, feel and look. The charming side of Portugal to be explored here in my post. As a part of European mainland, Portugal will never be as cheap as Asian destinations, however Portugal still hits the top 18 cheapest places to visit in 2023.

Beautiful and much cheaper northern part with famous: Porto, Vila Real and Peneda-Geres National Park will bring dream attractions. If you are looking for seaside holidays, check my guide on best coastal cities in Portugal.

Peneda-Geres National Park will bring you great adventure and lots of adrenaline. It’s also a class hiking destination in one of the most beautiful parks in Europe. Exlore canyoning and kayaking tours, I tried both options and it was an unforgettable and enjoyable experience. Kayaking tours are family friendly, so it’s a great option for a day-trip among nature. Canyoning with Manawa Agency was one of the best adventures I ever had in my life – they are extremely professional and the tour is organized on a highest level with amazing drone shots (photo below)! Book Canyoning activities with Manawa.

5. Vietnam ($20-25/per day).

Vietnam is my second favourite country in Southeast Asia. With its amazing coastline, post-war landmarks and biggest CAVES in the world – it makes in not only hottest destination in the world but also one of the cheapest places to visit. Traveling on a budget is very doable in Vietnam and it’s also pleasurable. With its delicous street food (I know a lot of people say it can make you sick but I would NOT agree with that, and it also depends on many factors). There are hunders of street food vendors, chose fried and fresh food. I was traveling on a budget for a month across Vietnam and never got sick.
