The ancient Kingdom of Aragon was the only region I haven’t been exploring in Spain. The last 15 years I have traveled throughout Spain via many road, train and hiking routes. Aragon region with majestic Pyrenees was on my list for a long time. But with such dramatic mountain peaks reaching up to 3404 meters, I needed to secure enough time to explore this land of huge heritage, magnificent natural wonders and food delights.
I hiked number of Pyrenees trails, took one of the most scenic road trips through Pyrenees from Spain to France, visited old medieval towns and flagship cities of the region and here is my recommendation on best things to see on a road trip in Aragon region, chose from best routes and hiking trails to live a magnificent exploration adventure.
Lifetime road trip in Aragon region.
It’s hard to say which is the most captivating part of the Aragon’s region, as it differs so much with breathtaking landscapes and heritage.
There are 17 Autonomous regions in Spain (including Canary Islands Archipelago), each extremely rich with its unique culture, topography and centuries-old traditions – feels like visiting separate countries.
Aragon is situated in the northeastern part of Spain, it is blessed with diverse geographical features, from dramatic mountain range – Pyrenees to lush river valleys and picturesque plains. It comprises three provinces: Huesca, Zaragoza, and Teruel – with Zaragoza its capital city.

There are two countries you are allowed to drive to from Spain: France and Andora. You need to communicate this while collecting the car and purchase extra insurance of Euro 20/per each trip.

2. TORLA-ORDESA – highly popular mountain town in the heart of the Aragonese Pyrenees.

3. Go on hiking or skiing adventure in Pyrenees Mountains.
Aragon offers an array of outdoor activities to thrill adventure lovers. Hike through the mesmerizing Ordesa Valley, ski down the slopes of Formigal or Candanchu in winter, or indulge in water sports on the Ebro River.

4. Visit Zaragoza - Aragon's capital city.
Zaragoza is a must stop on your road trip through Aragon. Zaragoza is the region’s bustling capital, where modernity merges seamlessly with historical charm. Majestic Basílica del Pilar.
The Basílica del Pilar, founded in the 12th century, is extremely important religious site in Zaragoza and the whole Spain, dedicated to Our Lady of the Pillar, the patroness of the city. If you are lucky you can experience the vibrant festivals of Aragon, such as the Fiestas del Pilar in Zaragoza, a celebration of the patron saint of the city.

The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site and houses a museum showcasing its rich history, as well as an array of beautiful courtyards, gardens, and ornate rooms of stunning Moorish architecture.
5. Try Aragon's traditional dishes.
Aragonese cuisine is characterized by its use of fresh and local ingredients, it will be difficult to find fresh sea food or vegetarian dishes. Majority of traditional dishes would be meat – savor the culinary treasures of the region, including hearty stews like the lamb-based ternasco and escudella – a flavorsome meat and vegetable stew. However, Aragon culinary experience has to play a part of the road trip in Aragon!
Traditional Dishes – Try the hearty Lamb Chilindrón, flavorful Trucha a la Aragonesa (Aragonese trout), or various tapas dishes that capture the essence of the region’s culinary traditions.
The region has exeptional cheese and famous olive oil from Bajo Aragon, known for its exceptional quality. Huesca olive oil I bought has light green colour and tastes incredible. Sample Migas – a mix of fried bread, sausages, and garlic. The renowned jijas de buey, bull meat sausages marinated in spices.
If you are a meat eater you can’t miss extremely popular Teruel’s cured ham, which owes its unique flavor to the region’s cold, dry climate. Indulge in fragrant truffles harvested from the hills of Sarrión.
6. Huesca
I stayed in Huesca for a week to discover it boasts numerous historical landmarks showcasing its ancient past.
Huesca offers a truly memorable experience and is a mus stop in your road trip in Aragon – I would never expect to find such magnificent historical sights – see yourself below. This overwhelming historical city was the capital of the Kingdom of ARAGON between 1096 and 1118.
Iconic Huesca Cathedral.
Huesca Cathedral, a magnificent masterpiece of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Dating back to the 13th century, this religious gem enchants visitors with its intricate details, stunning stained glass windows, and a majestic altar.
The cathedral’s tower offers panoramic views of the city, making it a treat for history enthusiasts and photography aficionados alike. Opening times are from 2024.
San Pedro el Viejo Abbey Monastery.
Abbey of San Pedro el Viejo – A captivating Romanesque church with traces of Mudéjar influences. Admire the elegant cloister and the crypt with its unique frescoes from the 12th century.
