Barcelona – the Catalonian capital city- is always at the top of my favourite destinations. I’ve put together this 3-day Barcelona travel itinerary around location rather than simply ticking attractions off a list. You’ll see Barcelona’s biggest sights, but I’ve quieter streets, viewpoints, food stops and a few places where I’d slow down and simply enjoy the city.

Unique Barcelona travel itinerary.

Barcelona is a cultural city with a diversity of historical spots, art galleries, handcraft shops.

Some of the museums in Barcelona have free entry on Sundays. You can skip sightseeing at any time and take a walk through the narrow streets with small restaurants where you can sit and enjoy the cosy climate or try one of the most delicious cuisines in the world!

Is 3 days enough for Barcelona?

Yes — three days is enough for a fantastic Barcelona travel itinerary.

Three days gives you enough time to experience the city’s major highlights without spending your entire trip inside museums and queues.

This itinerary focuses on:

  • Sagrada Família
  • Park Güell
  • Casa Batlló
  • La Pedrera
  • Gothic Quarter
  • Barcelona Cathedral
  • El Born
  • La Rambla
  • La Boqueria
  • Barceloneta Beach
  • Montjuïc
  • Barcelona’s best viewpoints
  • Catalan food and neighbourhood life.

DAY 1 - Gothic Barcelona.

it is the historic heart of Barcelona with 2,000-year-old Roman roots.

It’s one of my favourite parts of the city, as you can escape the crowds in the winding streets, finding local galleries and independent shops.

La Rambla & Saint Joseph Market.

Walk towards La Rambla – Barcelona’s famous boulevard.

Yes, it’s touristy as hell but I still think you should walk it at least once.

Visit Mercat de Sant Josep de La Boqueria, usually known simply as La Boqueria, is one of Barcelona’s most famous food markets.

I would also recommend visiting the Picasso Museum area.

The city market activity was set up in the 13th century. In the beginning, it was a commercial market. But the location, which was in the middle of Rambla (the main street in Barcelona), very close to the seaside, made it a perfect trading centre. The current covered market was established in the 19th century.

Try traditional food.

The position that will pop up a few times in your Barcelona travel itinerary is food 😉 Some say that Spanish cuisine is boring. I wouldn’t agree, and here are a few local options to try:

Gambas con salsa de tomate – this is delicious!

Patatas bravas — fried potatoes with spicy or smoky sauce.

Bombas — potato croquettes traditionally associated with Barcelona.

Escalivada — roasted peppers and aubergine.

Crema catalana — a Catalan dessert similar to crème brûlée.

Barcelona travel itinerary

A good idea is to order tapas (starters), you’ll be able to taste different kinds of specialities /usually 4-6 Euro/.

Walk through Parc de la Ciutadella, located near Playa Barceloneta! It’s probably one of the most spectacular beaches on the mainland.

Barcelona Port

DAY 2 - Gaudí's Barcelona — Sagrada Família & Park Güell

Sagrada Familia is Gaudí’s masterpiece and probably the most famous Barcelona attraction.

The building has been under construction for over 100 years. The structure follows the tradition of magnificent Gothic cathedrals.

Sagrada Família tickets currently start at €26.

Book your ticket ahead of your trip. Even if you’ve seen hundreds of photographs of it, walking inside is a completely different experience.

Sagrada Familia

Park Güell is on the top of my Barcelona travel itinerary. This place is a sophisticated public park and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The official site recommends buying tickets in advance due to a daily limit of visitors. Visitors have a 30-minute window after their ticketed entry time, and there is no re-entry once you leave.

The current general admission ticket is €18.

DAY 3 - Barcelona attractions!

PLAZA ESPANA: One of the most famous spots is Plaza España in Barcelona. A short walk from there is Castell de Montjuïc with the Magic Fountain. Take the steps to get to the top of the Montjuïc hill to see an amazing panoramic view of Barcelona.

CASA BATTLO: Visit Antoni Gaudí’s masterpiece – famous is Casa Batlló. The architectural details were created by Gaudí as he was hired by the owner of the building (a businessman) to renovate it. Gaudi was already known for several ongoing projects in Barcelona (like Sagrada Familia). The outside facade is covered by mosaics made from ceramic tile shards (the style originally coming from France), made from odd-shaped pieces of broken colourful cups and plates.

PLAZA REIAL: Have coffee in the hidden Plaza Reial located in the centre of Barcelona!

Where to stay in Barcelona?

Gothic Quarter is best for:

  • historic streets
  • nightlife
  • easy walking
  • proximity to major attractions

Best tips for Barcelona.

Bring comfortable shoes. Barcelona is a walking city.

Use public transport: Barcelona has a great underground network. You can use public transport, but you’ll still spend a surprising amount of time walking between metro stations, plazas, attractions and restaurants.

Best free things to do in Barcelona.

You don’t need to buy a ticket every few hours to have an incredible Barcelona travel itinerary:

  • Wander the Gothic Quarter
  • Explore El Born
  • Walk along Barceloneta
  • Walk through Parc de la Ciutadella
  • Walk Passeig de Gràcia and see Gaudí’s buildings from outside
  • Watch sunset from Montjuïc
