Rovaniemi is 800 kilometres north of Helsinki, Finland’s capital.
It is considered the capital of Lapland, with magical attractions in wintertime (including insane crowds). Rovaniemi is famous mainly as the official hometown of Santa Claus, but there is much more to it. It is one of the best-known gateways to Finnish Lapland and the Arctic. And of course, the city is a popular base for seeing the Aurora Borealis.
The entire Lapland region records hundreds of thousands of overnight stays specifically during the mid-winter peak. Estimates indicate that December alone brings tens of thousands of staying and day-trip travelers directly to Rovaniemi.

A few words about the science and magic behind the Aurora Borealis. These dancing lights are caused by solar particles colliding with the Earth’s atmosphere, creating a vibrant display of colours in the sky.
The Aurora Borealis season generally runs from late August into early April, with the darker months offering the best conditions.
In September, the tour departed at 9.30 pm and lasted until 4 am. But we were lucky to witness a magnificent clear sky with million of stars and the aurora.

For the best chances, plan your visit between late August and early April. During these months, the nights are long and the skies are often clear, providing ideal conditions for aurora hunting.
Optimal Weather Conditions:
GOING ON YOUR OWN: While the Northern Lights can appear on any given night, clear skies are crucial for visibility. If you are going chasing Aurora Borealis in Rovaniemi town, it makes sense to check the local weather forecasts regularly and look for nights with minimal cloud cover.
The aurora forecast, available online, can also be a helpful tool in predicting the likelihood of a display. There are plenty of aurora forecast apps, including live cameras.
GOING WITH A TOUR:
If you are going with the tour, there’s no need to check the weather forecast, as the tour operators know exactly where to look for the aurora and they use the most accurate forecast. They have several spots for aurora viewing.
Time of Night:
Prime aurora typically occurs between 10 PM and 2 AM. However, don’t be discouraged; nature is unpredictable, and the lights can sometimes appear earlier or later. Keep your eyes on the sky and be ready for a show at any time.

There are a few very good spots for watching the Aurora Borealis in Rovaniemi town, some easily accessible with a short walk.
1. Ounasvaara Fell
Just a short drive from the city center, Ounasvaara Fell offers a stunning vantage point for aurora viewing. The elevated location provides a clear view of the horizon, free from light pollution. Bundle up, pack some snacks, and enjoy the serene beauty of the Finnish wilderness.
TRAVEL ADVICE: The observation deck is easily accessible on foot – it takes about 35 minutes from the city centre, and the path leads through a wonderful forest.
2. Santa Claus Village
