Guatemala is already a stunning destination considering its magnificent volcano hiking adventures, but I never expected it would greet travelers with such exceptional cuisine. Antigua, the ancient colonial city is not only a huge travelers hub but one of the most amazing places I’ve seen. In Antigua, you’ll be able to find all kinds of food – starting from incredible fresh tropical fruits, via international and traditional dishes, veggie and even vegan-friendly options. I tried several local specialties in the best bars and restaurants in Antigua and here is the best culinary travel guide I can recommend. Perhaps Guatemalan cuisine won’t blow your mind but it’s much diverse than many other Latin countries.
The best cafe bars and restaurants in Antigua.
Just on the first night, I was shocked by the number of restaurants, bars and tavernas are in Antigua, bustling with live music, paintings, colorful drinks and people. Mexican, Guatemalan, International, there isn’t a cuisine you wouldn’t find in Antigua. The most popular Guatemalan dishes contain meat but luckily there are also some vegetarian options.
I highly recommend trying Horchata (Agua de horchata) – a traditional Guatemalan drink made with rice, water and milk.
Guatemalan food.
Guatemalan food is a blend of Mayan, Spanish, and other influences. I would say Mexican for sure. This fusion creates an interesting culinary identity and traditional cooking techniques. I was thankful for flavor diversity in Guatemalan food, I was vegan for a few years and I remember my trip to Nicaragua .. I was mostly on rice, beans and avocado, sometimes fried banana.. which after a few weeks became a real hell for me .. it was so hard to get other vegan-friendly options.. Guatemalan food is full of fresh ingredients, such as corn, beans, tomatoes, and a multitude of chilies.
Additionally, they love sweets! 😉
Traditional Guatemalan food.
There are quite a few restaurants in Antigua, where you will be able to try the most popular Guatemalan special dishes:
- Pepián (a thick meat and vegetable stew),
- Kak’ik (a traditional turkey soup flavored with spices),
- Jocon (chicken in a green sauce).
Picasso Cafe.
The place is highly recommended by tourists and Tripadvisor, and it is definitely one of the best restaurants in Antigua. It’s a tiny dining spot but very unique.. with a great chef! You will not find a Wifi in the house, if you ask for it, the owner will say: No wifi, here we talk 😉
The place has a special vibe and atmosphere. They serve non-Guatemalan cuisine and the menu is very short. The food is Italian-style, with lots of pasta and seafood. But it’s delicious!
PRICE: 80-100 Q per person
Restaurante Fridas - La Antigua Guatemala!
Located in the north part of Antigua – Restaurante Fridas in my opinion – one of the best dining spots in town! Amazing atmosphere and even better food – fajitas and vegetable tortillas were my favorites but this place will please meat lovers! The place is slightly more expensive but trust me worth it!.
PRICE: 100-200 Q per person.
Alegría Café / Specialty Coffee Shop.
One of the best coffee shops I found near the main Fontaine Square. Great spot to relax, have cake and a cup of coffee – in wonderful traditional pottery (I couldn’t find it anywhere to buy). My favorite was local Kambucha. Yummy!
Sky Cafe.
Perched on the rooftop of a charming building, Sky Café is an ideal place to enjoy stunning sunsets over the city with a wonderful volcano view/weather permitting. After an active day, you’ll enjoy a selection of local beers and tropical cocktails. The open-air setting, combined with friendly service, creates an inviting atmosphere for everyone seeking a good time.
This is also a great breakfast and brunch place for popular Guatemalan dishes.
If you want to know a little more stories behind the food Antigua foodie tour is a great idea (top-rated on Tripadvisor). And Guatemala City Tour will help you identify the best restaurants in Antigua.
Hotel Selina Antigua.
First of all – it’s a great spot to stay. Hotel Selina is a charismatic spot with plenty of facilities in place, and also highly entertaining restaurant and bar!
I had tacos with grilled cauliflower, guacamole and tomato sauce. Something light but very tasty! There are many options in the menu for meat lovers. If you decide to stay, you’re even getting a welcome drink. place is clean and really well-organized.
Los Moros by Porta Hotel Antigua.
Latin bar and a lovely Guatemalan restaurant, with plenty of vegetarian-friendly, gluten-free and vegan options, making it one of my favorite restaurants in Antigua. There is a menu of the month for Q189 including a starter, main course and dessert.
My favorite traditional soup: Tortilla soup for only Q59 (Traditional soup prepared with roasted tomatoes and tortilla, accompanied by avocado, fried tortilla, fresh cheese and cilantro). This is also the only place I found Snapper (fish).
