Ragusa, Sicily – one of the most amazing cities I have ever been to!

If you travel through Sicily driving from Syracuse to Agrigento you should visit Ragusa. It only takes an hour to get to there. This amazing city lays in Ragusa Province. It looks fascinating from the road view toward the city. It lays on a limestone hill between two valleys: Cava San Leonardo and Cava Santa Domenica.

Tight buildings climbing upper the hill, magnificent architecture and baroque churches are worth seeing. Also, the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista is incredlible. Rebuilt twice, the version that you will meet today comes from 1718. What’s more, it is in an archetypal Sicilian Baroque style.

History of the city

Ragusa has a very interesting history. In fact it consist of two towns. The cities united into one municipality in 1926. Most of the city’s history deals with the lower Ragusa called Ibla. Ibla was the ancient city rebuilt after heavy damages. They happened after the earthquake in 1693, which killed about 5,000 inhabitants. It also devastated the south-east Sicily. The upper Ragusa comes from around 1700s. But the very origins of the city we can find even back to the 2nd millennium BC.

I strongly recommend you to visit Ragusa in Sicily! It is very interesting and charmng city. You can feel the essence of the island there. You’ll be also amazed by it’s cuisine, which is one of the best in the world. Trust me, you’ll find there one of the best pastas and pizzas on entire Sicily.

What do you think about beautiful Ragusa? Don’t hesitate to leave a comment down below and share your thoughts! Also, feel free to write to me if you have some questions about this city, Sicily or even Italy. I’d be happy to help you!
