Destinations, Europe, Spain

It all started with my trip to Pyrenees. I was doing some winter hiking in these amazing limestone mountains, when decided to spend few days in one of the nearest cities – Huesca – which history goes back to more than 2000 years ago! Most of you know the history of Spain is one of the most extensive in the world. Huesca and Zaragoza are no different – and the whole Aragon region was breathtaking!

Zaragoza, the capital of the Aragon region in Spain, is a city steeped in history and culture. With its rich past, stunning architecture, and vibrant atmosphere, there are numerous attractions and sights to explore in this fascinating city. I would advice to spend 2 days to have enough time to savor all the beautiful sites. Check the most notable things to see in Zaragoza to shape your seightseeing itinerary.

Basílica del Pilar - the heart of Zaragoza.

Whether you are into heritage or not – the Basilica is on the top of the things to see in Zaragoza. The Basílica del Pilar is extremely important religious site in Zaragoza and whole Spain, dedicated to Our Lady of the Pillar, the patroness of the city. Founded in the 12th century by Saint James the Greater, this Baroque-style basilica is one of the oldest churches in the city. The basilica’s stunning interior is adorned with an array of frescoes, sculptures, and ornate altarpieces, while the exterior boasts an impressive façade with a large dome. If you prefer you can book a private tour for this attraction. Suggestions: The Basilica looks amazing at nightime from the other side of the river or nearby river bridge.

Santa Capilla – The Holy Chapel of the Pillar, work of Ventura Rodríguez – is one of the most stunning masterpieces I’ve seen in my life. People from all over the world are fascinated by this monument.

Beautiful Moorish-style Aljafería Palace!

If there are only few things you wish to visit in Zaragoza – Aljafería Palace cannot be missed! It’s a must-see attraction – a magnificent example of Moorish architecture. Built in the 11th century during the rule of the Taifas, this fortress-palace served as the residence of various Muslim and Christian rulers throughout the centuries. Today, the palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site and houses a museum showcasing its rich history, as well as an array of beautiful courtyards, gardens, and ornate rooms.

La Seo Cathedral.

One of the most iconic landmarks in Zaragoza is La Seo Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Pillar. This Romanesque-Gothic masterpiece, constructed between the 12th and 15th centuries, is an impressive example of Spanish architecture. The cathedral features a beautiful blend of styles, with its striking façade adorned with intricate sculptures and a stunning rose window. Inside, the cathedral boasts a wealth of art and history, including the 14th-century Gothic cloister and the Chapel of the Pillar, which houses the venerated image of Our Lady of the Pillar. There is Goya monument in front of the Cathedral.

Caesaraugusta Archaeological Site.

For those interested in history, the Caesaraugusta Archaeological Site is a must-visit. This ancient Roman city is an excellent example of Roman urban planning and architecture.

Visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins of the city, including the Roman forum, thermal baths, and an amphitheater, which once held up to 6,000 spectators.

Caesaraugusta Archaeological Site is now located at the Roman Theatre Museum. The remains were only discovered in 1972.

El Tubo - the old town.

No visit to Zaragoza would be complete without experiencing its lively and vibrant street life. El Tubo, the old quarter of the city, is a perfect place to explore the city’s rich cultural heritage. With its narrow, winding streets lined with shops, bars, and restaurants, El Tubo offers a glimpse into the heart of Zaragoza’s traditions and way of life.

Zaragoza is a city with a wealth of attractions and sights to explore, from its stunning architecture and religious sites to its rich cultural heritage and lively streets. Cafe 1885 is one of the top things to see and experience in Zaragoza. It’s located on one of the main streets of the Old Town, leading to powerful Basilica del Pilar. It amazes with its beautiful interior and medieval touch and really tasty food.
