New Caledonia with second largest barrier reef in the world is one of the most exotic destinations I have visitied recently. This French oversea territory country has created world’s biggest lagoon and protected bioreserve on the planet!

The whole New Caledonia archipelago stretches across 140 virgin islands, with many easily accessible from the shores of Noumea – the capital city and main port.

One destination that should definitely target is Amedee Island – the “Snake Island”, home to the famous semi-aquatic seas snake and incredible white Lighthouse. Along with Isle of Pines, these are two stunning destinations for best diving and snorkeling adventure in New Caledonia. What’s on the island and why you should visit this white sand paradise – here is what to do in Amedee Island.

What to do in Amedee Island?

Amedee Island is truly amazing. It is surrounded by a beautiful lagoon, which is perfect for swimming and snorkeling. New Caledonia along with some of the reachest marine biodiversity has officially created world’s largest protected area.

While there are few popular islands around, Amedee is recommended by the local tour operators as the best spot for snorkeling adventure. The crystal-clear waters are home to a variety of colorful fish and other marine life, making it a great place for underwater exploration.

While most of the surrounding islands have no facilities, Amedee Island is spacious, has a tiny bar /opening hours may different depending on a season/ and is home to a beautiful white Lighthouse, offering magnificent panoramic view from the top.

How to get to Amedee island?

Every morning tens of luxury yachts, speed boats and water taxis embark from Noumea harbour heading to nearby islands.

The easiest way to get to the island is booking one of the half or full-day tours. It takes 40 minutes to reach the island by a speed boat. One of the best tour options to Amedee Island with hotel pick up and drop off, including welcome drinks and lunch buffet is Amedee Lighthouse full-day excursion.

If you are seeking for a private tour, there isn’t a better option than top rated Amedee Island and Outer Reef Half-Day Private Water Taxi Tour from Noumea.

Most of the tour boats are high standard. The trip was quite bumpy but very adventurous. I did not have to use any sea sickness tablets, but if you are sea sensitive you may decide to take some.

I went for a full-day tour to Amedee Island. The tour departed at 9am from Noumea harbour and we had be back on the boat at 3pm. So it was a long day on the island, thus it is highly recommended to carry few things like food, water and sun lotion.

Amedee Lighthouse.

One of the most iconic landmarks on Amedee Island is its lighthouse, which dates back to 1862. You can climb to the top of the lighthouse to enjoy stunning panoramic views of the island and its surroundings. The climb is not for the faint of heart, but the view from the top is well worth the effort.

Walk on the Glass-Bottom Boat.

If you want to explore the lagoon without getting wet, take a ride on the glass-bottom boat. The boat has a clear bottom that allows passengers to see the marine life below, without having to get in the water. It’s a great way to get a different perspective on the island’s underwater world.

Walk the island.

If you are wondering what to do in Amedee Island apart from water activities, taking a walk around the island is a great idea. There is a dedicated path along the protected area.

Amedee Island is home to a turtle sanctuary, where visitors can learn about the conservation efforts being made to protect these beautiful creatures. The sanctuary is run by local volunteers, who are passionate about preserving the natural beauty of the island and its wildlife. Many turtles are swimming around the wooden bridge, few metres from the shore.

Amedee-the snake island.

Amedee Island that is home to a large population of amazing sea snakes. They are all over the island, grass areas and ocean. You can observe the snakes from a safe distance, but be aware that they are venomous and should not be approached.

Sea snakes in Amedee Island.

Sea snakes on Amedee Island are scpectacular creatures, however it is important to know they are more venomous than cobras and even small amount can kill a human. However there is no need to be nervous!

These snakes are NOT aggressive if not disturbed. I followed and filmed few of them really closely and they were very calm. I couldn’t stop thinking how beautiful they are.

Relax on the beach on a sunbed.

There are many sunbeds and several picnic areas on Amedee Island, where you can relax and fully enjoy a beach day. The view spreads over a green lagoon of the harbour.

What to take to Amedee Island?

Even if you have catering within your boat tour, I would highly recommed taking the following essentials:

  • Water/Drinks
  • Snacks & food
  • Sun lotion, sun glasses, towel
  • Snorkeling mask & water shoes /most tours do not offer snorkeling equipment/. There is a market in the harbour pavillion, next to the tour operators white tents – but they didn’t have any snorkeling equipment either.
  • Medical insurance – SafetyWing is my highest recommendation.

If you are looking to purchase any snorkeling or water equipment, go to Decathlon in Noumea.

Exploring Noumea.

There are few sites worth visiting in Noumea. If you want to explore the city you might go on a Guided City Orientation Tour of Noumea or very popular Anse Vata Tchou Tchou Yellow or Green Train, which rides around some of Noumea’s idyllic natural landmarks and exciting inner-city neighborhoods.

If you prefer a mixture of gastronomy, culture and art The “French Touch” Tour is an interesting option.

I was amazed with the Kanak Culture and Tjibaou Cultural Center, which is a great place to learn about the history and traditions of the island.
