Top things to do in Corralejo Fuerteventura.

Corralejo is a lovely seaside town and port, located on the north side of Fuerteventura. Few things like the spectacular Dunes National Park and International Kite Festival make Corralejo a unique destination and attract people from all over the world. The Kite Festival is unreal! I traveled to Fuerteventura a number of times and during my last visit, I stayed for a month, which allowed me to properly explore this magnificent island. Here are top things to do in Corralejo Fuerteventura, that will keep you busy for the whole holidays.

Top things to do in Corralejo Fuerteventura.

Corralejo is located 35 km from the island’s capital city – Puerto del Rosario and 38 km from the main airport. It’s a lovely much quieter area than the popular south side of the island. There are plenty of things to do in Corralejo, you will not be bored for a second with this itinerary. Here is an informative and adventurous travel guide for Corralejo.

How to get from the Fuerteventura Airport to Corralejo?

There are a few ways to get from Fuerteventura Airport to Corralejo:

  • Booking convenient private transfer/shuttle on GetTransfer.com,
  • Car rent on Rentalcars.com – the world’s largest online car rental service, with the best deals from major car rentals, 24/7 customer service and free cancellation. I have used it on every Canary Island and the service was always fabulous.
  • Taxi – probably more expensive than pre-booked transfer/shuttle.
  • Public transport – bus No 6 – takes about 45 minutes to get from Puerto del Rosario to Corralejo.

Public transport in Fuerteventura.

Public transport in Fuerteventura is very well organized and it is possible to explore the island by bus. There is no direct bus from the airport to Corralejo – first you need to take bus No 3 and swap for bus No 6 going to Corralejo. All timetables & bus routes for all lines can be checked on the official Fuerteventura public bus website TIADHE.

Car rental in Fuerteventura.

Renting a car in Fuerteventura has great advantages – it gives you lots of flexibility and freedom to explore this beautiful island and take amazing road trips. Rentalcars.com is my favorite platform for car hire, it contains the best deals and the hire is always easy to manage and hassle-free. It compares offers from a number of leading car rentals.

The roads in Fuerteventura are good quality – the only problem might be the southern tale of the island, where you should have 4×4 WD car.

Best things to do in Corralejo Fuerteventura.

North of the island is much quieter and slightly more windy than the southern coast. It’s quite funny the two most spectacular National Parks – Corralejo Dunes Natural Park and Jandia Nature Park are located on two tales of the island on the north and south sides. After exploring the north for days, these are the most fascinating things to do in Corralejo but generally, the place is a natural wonder with kilometers of wild beaches and desert landscapes facing the deep blue ocean.

Booking.com

Most of accommodations in Corralejo are private villas or appartments with swimming pool area on the premises. It’s a perfect alternative affordable option to overcrowded hotels.

Corralejo Natural Park & spectacular Sand Dunes.

Corralejo Dunes Natural Park is 2,600 ha desert of unspoiled white sand dunes and it is one of the best things to do in Corralejo in Fuerteventura. It’s a unique natural wonder of the Island and a true Canary Archipelago treasure. There is no entry fee and the park is open for walkers and hikers.

Car parking is possible along the road with many spaces, however, in peak season it may be difficult to find a spot with a very popular surfing beach on the other side of the road.

Go for a popular Quad or Buggy Safari Tour across the sand dunes is a great fun and unforgettable adventure!

Fuerteventura International Kite Festival in Corralejo.

One of the most spectacular, internationally recognized annual events – the Kite Festival is organized in Corralejo Beach. It is truly one of the best things to do in Corralejo Fuerteventura, it is worth planning your holidays for November to experience this festival and also escape the autumn aura. Professional and amateur kite owners from all over the world gather to showcase their passion for kite flying. The 7-day festival spreads across Corralejo white sand beach and El Cotillo Beach.

Watching all these incredible, colorful kite creatures carried by the winds of Fuerteventura is really an unforgettable experience. With lots of food stalls on the beach, it all makes it a great outdoor day.

Corralejo Old Town & Harbour.

Corralejo port town used to be a small fishing village. Now the place is buzzing with beach bars and seaside restaurants. Walk the streets of the old town called ‘casco viejo’, situated near the harbour.

Visit unique Lobos Island.

Trip to Lobos Island cannot be missed! It is definitely one of the best things to do in Corralejo – adventurous and pleasantly relaxing ferry tour to another natural wonder of Canary Archipelago.

Lobos Island is easily accessible from Corralejo – it is only 15 minutes ferry trip, as the island is located 2 kilomteres from Fuerteventura shores. Ferry ticket cost around $16 but more importantly you need to obtain FREE LOBOS PASS before going. Lobos Island is a Natural Park with limited number of visitors up to 400 daily.

Full guide on how to book a trip, free Lobos Pass (authotrisation) what to take and how to explore the island – in my post.

Go surfing in Corralejo beach.

Kilometres of beaches in Corralejo are the perfect spot for surfers and kitesurfers. Surfing is always a great option to stay more active on holidays and in Corralejo Fuerteventura it’s double fun. If you haven’t tried it yet – this is a must – it’s one of the best fun ever! It’s a great spot to take surf lessons all year round run by qualified surf instructors (ISA) – you can choose from plenty of options among the top rated courses (Tripadvisor):

Hiking adventure near Corralejo.

Corralejo is the perfect starting point for a number of volcano hikes. One of the most spectacular hiking routes is Calderon Hondo. I hiked every peak in Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Tenerife ;))) Along with Cofete hike and the highest peak of Fuerteventura – Pico de la Zarza, the Calderon Hondo volcano trail is equally spectacular. I took a bus to Lajares and hiked back toward Corralejo along all the calderas on the photo. It’s a 12 kilometers hike, but if you feel tired enough you can only hike Calderon Hondo, or still take the long route and skip hiking on top of the volcanoes but follow a flat path around each caldera.

Discover all the magic places in Fuerteventura.

Don't miss Lanzarote Tour with Wine Tasting.

Lanzarote island is another magnificent island to discover with Timanfaya National Park as top attraction. Going on a day tour along Lanzarote highlights and wine tasting can be a very relaxing way of exploring the neighboring volcanic island.

Enjoy exceptional local cuisine.

Spanish food is beyond compare. Canary Island cuisine is even better.. I’m very positive saying that. It’s mostly based on ocean delights (seafood) and it’s regional – and what’s most important always freshly cooked! There was only one time I was disappointed with the food in Corralejo harbour – Sotavento restaurant – avoid (the only great thing there was the service)! Not worth bothering with this place despite its fabulous location, there are plenty of other delicious local restaurants around. Tasting local cuisine is definitely one of the most enjoyable and best things to do in Corralejo, so ¡buen provecho!

Local dishes you MUST TRY:

  • Seafood paella with black rice,
  • Seafood soup (really delicious in most restaurants),
  • Goat stew – a local speciality – Fuerteventura is also called Goat Island. I’ve been vegetarian for 15 years, so can’t recommend it myself but people say it’s a class dish,
  • Fried goat cheese in French cake with homemade jam,
  • Pimiento de Padron – fried green peppers – Spanish speciality (I could eat it 3 times a day!)
  • Grilled mussels with garlic butter,
  • Sea food tagliatelle in tomato sauce,
  • Fried prawns with garlic or grilled fish (catch of the day) is standard,
  • Cost of each dish rates between $15-$22.
