Tatra Mountains may not be the highest in Europe but they are very challenging on most of the routes. That’s why it is important to familiarize with the character of the mountains and take some short but still demanding trails – like Sarnia Skala. Here are a few easy hikes in Zakopane to get a good warm-up before the highest peaks of the caldera.

Easy hikes in Zakopane.

1. Sarnia Skala hiking trail.

The Sarnia Skala hiking trail offers a fantastic opportunity for adventurous hikers to explore the stunning landscapes of Zakopane.

The Sarnia Skala trail is a 4.5-kilometer loop that typically takes about two to three hours to complete. It’s an ideal choice for those who may not have extensive hiking experience but still wish for some outdoor activity. The trail begins at the edge of Zakopane, making it easily accessible for those staying in the city. Zakopane is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, and the Sarnia Skala trail is a perfect example of the natural beauty this region has to offer.

Sarnia Skala hiking route.

Sarnia Skala is considered one of the easy hikes in Zakopane. The trail is well maintained, making it accessible to hikers of all abilities, it’s a peaceful walk in nature but depending on a season may  become more challenging.

The trail changes completely in wet conditions, as the rocky path becomes extremely slippery. Going up seems not as challenging as going down.

Sarnia Skala during rainy or icy conditions should be approached only by experienced hikers.

Sarnia Skala hiking route:

  • Starting point: Dolina Strazyka (easily accessible by 30 minute walk from Zakopane city centre).
  • Kopa nad Bialym 1035m.
  • Sarnia Skala 1378m.
  • Go down the same route till the crossroads and take trail toward Kalatowki.

Beginnig of the trail.

The beginning of the trail leads through a magnificent forest. The initial section of the trek is relatively level, it’s a good warm up ahead of the rocky section. It not unusual to spot some local wildlife, such as deer or a variety of birds that call the Tatra Mountains home.

Sarnia Skala - the "Sharp Rock"

At the top of Sarnia Skala trail, you’ll be treated to breathtaking vistas of the Tatra Mountains and the surrounding landscape – unless it’s foggy 😉 Sarnia Skala, or “Sharp Rock” is a distinctive geological formation that captivates hikers with its rugged beauty and imposing presence.

2. Nosal hiking trail.

If you are looking for easy hikes in Zakopane – Nosal is a perfect choice and Zakopane is the perfect base for your hiking escapades.

Nosal is a famous ski slope in Zakopane but it also offers a short but rewarding hiking trail in Tatra Mountains. Nosal trailhead is easily accessible by foot, car, or public transportation from Zakopane.

The way up to the summit of Nosal Peak starts with towering trees, the path gradually inclines bringing you to the summit with stunning panoramic views of Tatra Mountains, which are absolutely worth every step of the hike.

Nosal Peak summary:

Hike duration: 1 hour via fast route/more steep route.

3. Hala Gasienicowa hike.

Hala Gasienicowa is one of the easy hikes in Zakopane and it is definitely one of the most spectacular routes for less experienced trekkers.

It brings you to a magnificent mountain valley dotted with number of huts, base camps, surrounded with breathtaking views of Tatra Peaks.

Starting point: Kuznice (BLUE or YELLOW trail) both leading to Hala Gasienicowa and Murowaniec mountain hut (1508 meters).

Elevation: 1500 meters

Hike distance: 5 kilometers one way.

Hiking time: 1.5-2h depending on the season.

Hiking conditions in Tatra Mountains.

Hiking conditions in Tatra Mountains differ depending on a season. Summer can bring extreme heat, and winter months can be severe in snowfalls and winds. So preperation depends strictly on the time of the year. One thing is common for any season – sturdy hiking boots are a must and don’t forget to bring plenty of water and snacks to keep your energy levels up. There’s a restaurant in Murowaniec Hut but it can get extremely busy in high season.

4. Gasienicowy Black Pond hike.

It is an absolute gem in Tatra Mountains! I’m not sure if it can be considered among easy hikes in Zakopane but at the same time it is relatively moderate.

To reach Gasienicowy Black Pond you only need 40 minutes hiking from Hala Gasienicowa. You may have lunch in hala Gasienicowa to gain some extra calories, as the Black Pond cannot be missed!
