The most beautiful places to visit in Colombo Sri Lanka.

If you’re planning a trip to Colombo, forget what you think you know about capital cities. However, when I first arrived in this coastal city—it looked like complete chaos. But once we shook hands, I started appreciating its colonial charm, local markets and energy. Colombo isn’t just a transit hub or a business district. There’s plenty of fascinating places to visit in Colombo Sri Lanka.

Fascinating places to visit in Colombo Sri Lanka.

The city offers a diverse range of experiences. Colombo is quite popular among travelers from around the world, who spend one or two days and it’s more a gateway to other parts of Sri Lanka.

1. The Galle Face Green.

Yes – the Galle Face is your first stop for several reasons. First of all, it’s one of the most beautiful waterfront promenades facing the Indian Ocean in Sri Lanka. Secondly, it’s a local ground, where you can observe ordinary people dating, playing and selling street food.

2. Galle Face Hotel.

Even if you’re not staying at the Galle Face Hotel, you absolutely must visit. The iconic Galle Face Hotel—a grand colonial relic opened in 1864—presides over the green like a dignified elder. It’s one of the most extraordinary places to visit in Colombo Sri Lanka. Visit Firebeach Restaurant in the hotel, it’s absolutely stunning with gorgeous food /lovely dish ~ $40/.

Pro tip: Arrive around 5 PM and stay through sunset. The whole beach scene becomes impossibly romantic. This is where Colombo reveals its gentler, more poetic side. There are bed canopies in the restaurant, located just next to the rough waves.

3. Colombo Fort.

Walking through Fort’s narrow streets, you encounter Portuguese and Dutch colonial buildings adjacent to British structures.

It is said that almost 80% of Colombo Fort is owned by the Chinese.. A bit scary. There’s a nice beach as well, a golf course, but the majority of the area is under constant construction.

For a little bit of history – take a walk from the Old Parliament Building to the Colombo Fort or visit The Colombo National Museum, which deserves more credit than it typically receives.

4. Local markets.

Pettah Market (not that great anymore), used to be very popular, but the right place to visit is Galle Face Green Market, where you can sample delicious street food and buy incredible fruits that only taste right in Asia.

5. Fabulous Red Mosque - The Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque.

The Red Mosque is one of the most interesting places to visit in Colombo Sri Lanka. Built in 1908–1909 is a free-to-visit tourist attraction.

6. Sri Lankan food.

Culinary Delights: Apart from the fact that this is the spiciest cuisine I’ve ever seen in the world, Colombo is a food lover’s paradise, offering a variety of flavours and culinary experiences. From delectable street food to high-end restaurants serving both local and international cuisine.

Welcome to Ministry of Crab.

Extremely famous butnot chear restaurant serving crabs – listed among ‘Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list from 2015 to 2022. Not bad you have to say. The experience is amazing and the menu is beautifully crafted.

7. Watch a cricket match at Premadasa Stadium!

Cricket stadium is one of the top places to visit in Colombo Sri Lanka, and feel the atmosphere. Cricket is the biggest sport in Sri Lanka, and having India as a neighbour and world champions, makes it even more rivarly.

Getting around in Colombo.

For longer rides: UBER or PICK ME to travel around the city.

Colombo traffic is mad and in rush hours, you will get stuck in the traffic jam for a long time.

Local buses are also an option; they are very cheap but very crowded.

TUK-TUKS are widely available – don’t be scared of Tuk Tuks, at the end of the day, they know how to drive in this madness. BUT be prepared the driver does not know Colombo maps and you will have to instruct him. Negotiate fares before boarding. They’re cheaper than taxis and infinitely more character-filled.

Colombo Sri Lanka - practical travel advice.

When to visit: The dry season (December to March) offers the most comfortable weather, though Colombo is hot and humid year-round.

Packing essentials: Lightweight, breathable clothing, a sturdy pair of walking shoes, sunscreen, and a respectful attitude toward religious sites. Modest dress (covered shoulders and knees) is appropriate when visiting temples.

Language: English is widely spoken, especially in touristy areas.

Where to stay in Colombo?

Let’s expose Colombo accommodations – there are plenty of options, mid-budget, but you should know the standard may not be great. I stayed in ALL the below accommodations, so here is my opinion:

MID-BUDGET:

  1. MARINO BEACH COLOMBO: USD 75/per room, fabulous seaside location, great view and a rooftop swimming pool & bar. Fabulous!
  2. TAJ SAMUDRA 5* Hotel: USD 190/per room. The room rate is insane – the hotel is old and shabby. Don’t recommend for this price.
  3. RADISSON COLOMBO: USD 85/per room – the hotel is located in Colombo 4, which is a bit far from the City Fort. The rooms are pleasant but the breakfast is untidy with limited options.

LUXURY:

  1. SANGRI-LA COLOMBO: the best hotel in Colombo! USD195/per night.  Highly recommend.
  2. CINNAMON GRAND COLOMBO: USD 130/per night. Great swimming pool area with a bar. However best bar is in the lobby.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY:

FAIRWAY COLOMBO 4*Hotel: USD 45/per double room.
