Best time to visit Okinawa.

Okinawa was a must visit for me after backpacking Japan for the first time. I couldn’t wait to land on this tiny island, located in the middle of the ocean, that holds such complex history. Okinawa enjoys a subtropical climate, which means mild winters and hot, humid summers. So best time to visit Okinawa would depend on your weather preferences.

I landed in Okinawa in December to spend my birthday in an unusual, tropical destination and beside the fact that it was a bit chilly, which made me skip snorkeling and diving in crystal ocean waters. But the list of majestic places, memorable activities and unusual attractions in Okinawa is endless.

What is the best time to visit Okinawa?

The ideal time to explore Okinawa is during the spring: March to May and fall: September to November.

During these months, the weather is pleasantly warm, ranging from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius (68 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit) and it’s perfect for outdoor activities, which are stunning in Okinawa. Spring is probably the best time to visit Okinawa, as it also brings blooming cherry blossoms, which is one of the most famous scenery in Japan.

The summer (June to August) is the peak tourist season with intense humidity and occasional typhoons – so it’s a NO GO.

American influence on Okinawa.

Okinawa was a huge surprise for me, when it comes to American influence in style and architecture.

The islands were under U.S. administration during II World War until 1972. This era left a significant mark on the local way of life but I would never imagine it would be so visible, and so shifted from Japan style.

Luckily you are still able to try traditional Okinawan dishes, but expect many restaurants serving American-style diners – classic hamburgers and fries alongside.

How to get to Okinawa?

The easiest and fastest way to get to Okinawa is to take a flight. One of the cheapest flights are from Tokyo, I booked all my flights on TRIP.COM. (if booked in advance the cost is ~ 100$ one-way).

I spent 10 days traveling around Okinawa Island and I would definitely stay longer. 3 days in Okinawa are not enough to explore the biggest attractions of the island, which are: Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, Kerama Islands and Yanbaru National Park.

Spring time in Okinawa.

One of the greatest attractions on the island are local events in Okinawa. If you are looking to explore the local culture, spring would be the best time to visit Okinawa. Those two spring festivals are a must see:

  • The stunning cherry blossom trees in full bloom is a magic spectacle celebrated with numerous festivals.
  • During April and May, you can join the locals for Naha Haarii festival, which is a dragon boat race.

The pleasant weather during spring encourages to go hiking in places like the famous Hiji Falls or snorkeling in the crystal waters around the Kerama Islands.

Autumn in Okinawa.

The weather in autumn is still warm, with temperatures around 25°C (77°F) in September. October and November are one of the best time to visit Okinawa if you want to avoid the crowds while still enjoying beautiful weather.

Winter in Okinawa.

Okinawa in winter is quite mild compared to mainland Japan. Temperatures drop to around 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F), but there’s still plenty of adventure on the island.

This season is actually ideal for exploring the island’s historic sites like Shuri Castle, main cities in Okinawa, the Aquarium and the coastline.

Main cities in Okinawa.

NAHA – the capital city, is often the starting point for many travelers.

Naha is a mix of modernity and tradition. The most popular street is Kokusai Street, lined with shops and market stalls, which is a very good spot to try local delicacies (such as Okinawa soba and goya champuru).

Cities worth exploring: Okinawa City, Uruma and Ishigaki.

In Ishigaki you can visit the Yara River for a chance to see the traditional fishing techniques still practiced by locals. Don’t miss to try Ishigaki beef, which is regarded as one of the best meats in Japan.

What to see in Okinawa?

SHURI CASTLE IN NAHA.

While there are magnificent things to see in Okinawa island, I would advice to spend your first day wandering around Naha. You might also visit Shuri Castle – a World heritage Site, which is a must see in Okinawa. You can visit the interior of the castle. The castle is a beautiful representation of Ryukyu architecture, reflecting the island’s unique culture.

Gyokusendo Cave.

Gyokusendo Cave is a 5,000-meter-long limestone cavern with over a million stalactites. It is the largest cave in Okinawa. It only takes 45 minutes to get there by train from Naha.

The Majestic Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium.

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is the second largest aquariums in the world. The aquarium is massive with most exotic marine life, including manta rays and whale sharks.

Churaumi Aquarium is a must-visit for anyone seeking an extraordinary experience.

It is located in the north-west part of main Okinawa island in the National Government Park (Ocean Expo Park).

Diving in Kerama Islands.

One of the most famous attractions close to Okinawa Island is the Kerama Islands, a paradise for divers and snorkelers.

It only takes 30-minute by ferry to get to the island from Naha.

Kerama Islands offer some of the clearest waters in the world. The diverse underwater ecosystem allows you to swim alongside turtles and colorful fish. I recommend a full day snorkeling experience in the Kerama islands.

Best time to dive in Okinawa?

AUTUMN IS THE BEST TIME FOR DIVING & SNORKELING: Autumn in Okinawa is the best time for underwater adventures, as marine life becomes very active.

Try snake sake!

You will see huge jars with snakes everywhere in Okinawa! Snake sake, or “habu sake,” is a traditional Japanese liquor made by infusing rice sake with venomous snakes – primarily the habu snake found in the Okinawan archipelago.

This potent elixir is believed to possess various health benefits but I did not manage to drink it.
