COSTA RICA – a tropical paradise in the heart of Central America was my huge dream for a long time. I went for a long hiking trip in Costa Rica and Nicaragua at the same time, both dotted with active volcanoes and tropical adventure. The country offers endless attractions and natural wonders, but here is my list of the best things to do in Costa Rica, which include an impressive volcano hiking, crocodile watching on the Tarcoles River, and wandering across the most stunning national parks and wildlife.

Toucan - the best things to do in Costa Rica.

What are the best things to do in Costa Rica?

Some of the MUST-DO things in Costa Rica for adventurous travelers:

  • Experience LA FORTUNA, a premier destination for adventurous hikers like ME! 😉 It’s a charming town, serving as the gateway to Arenal Volcano National Park and an adventure hub.
  • Hiking ARENAL VOLCANO – the iconic symbol of the country – and a magnificent hiking experience, one of the best things to do in Costa Rica!
  • Trek through the cloud forests such as the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and the Central Highlands Cloud Forest.

Stroll Through San Jose.

We finally landed in San Jose.. The Dreamliner flight was amazing, but it’s a long trip from Europe.

We thought a nice evening walk to the city center of San Jose might be a good idea to chill and relax.. but I swear this was the noisiest square I have ever been to, due to hundreds of parrots nesting in the surrounding trees.

San Jose is a perfect starting point for your Central American adventure. The downtown with colorful murals and historic architecture catches your eye at every turn. The neoclassical National Theater, the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum and the Jade Museum might be interesting if you are looking to get some insights into the region’s indigenous peoples.

Central Market is great for the traditional flavors of Costa Rican cuisine. Barrio Escalante is going to bring lots of cafes, art galleries and boutiques.

Hiking Arenal Volcano.

Hiking Arenal Volcano National Park is a stunning adventure and one of the best things to do in Costa Rica.

While there are several hiking trails around Arenal Volcano, two stand out – the Arenal 1968 Trail and the Las Coladas Trail.

  • The Arenal 1968 trail gives you a unique opportunity to witness the aftermath of the volcano’s last eruption in 1968.
  • Las Coladas trail is a demanding yet rewarding trek. This trail is characterized by its rugged terrain and rocky paths, but is rewarded with spectacular views of the Arenal Volcano and the surrounding Arenal Lake.
The best things to do in Costa Rica - Hiking Arenal Volcano.

Arenal Volcano National Park is a must-visit. The park features well-maintained trails that offer breathtaking views of the volcano,

The La Fortuna waterfall, cascading from a height of 70 meters, provides the perfect backdrop for a refreshing swim after a long trek. Don’t forget your camera—the scenery is rich with photo opportunities!

Swim in the natural hot springs.

After an action-packed day, unwind in the natural hot springs around Arenal. These geothermal wonders are fed by the heat of the Arenal Volcano, offering a soothing experience amidst the rainforest. Enjoy soaking in warm, mineral-rich waters while listening to the sounds of nature—a true relaxation haven.

Surfing the Pacific Waves.

If you’re drawn to the ocean, the surf towns of Tamarindo and Jaco cater to both beginners and seasoned surfers alike. With consistent waves and vibrant beach culture, you’ll find surf schools offering lessons as well as board rentals. Enjoy the thrill of riding the waves during the day and relax under stunning sunsets at beachfront bars in the evenings.

Discover Cartago - the historical capital city.

Cartago, located at the foot of the majestic Irazú Volcano. Cartago is Costa Rica’s first capital city founded in 1563 by Spanish conquistadors.  Cartago is an architectural masterpiece, you can begin your journey through time with a visit to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels.

The Ruins of Santiago Apóstol Parish remind of the city’s resilience in the face of countless earthquakes.

Discover Poas Volcano!

You simply cannot miss this natural wonder. Almost every visitor is heading toward Poas Volcano National Park, located in the cloud forest, a maximum 2 hours drive from San Jose – check here for detailed information on How to get to Poas Volcano by public transport.

Hiking this active Volcano is among the best things to do in Costa Rica. Poas Volcano National Park – is one of the most spectacular volcanoes I’ve seen, located 2700m above sea level, with 350 meters 350-meter-deep lagoon crater.

If you decide to go with a tour, here are few top options to choose from:

Pacific Coast vs. Caribbean Coast.

The Pacific coast is a hub of activity and world-class surf spots – from the surfer’s paradise of Tamarindo and Playa Grande to the beautiful beaches of Marino Ballena National Park.

For a more off-the-beaten-path experience, venture to the Osa Peninsula and the remote Corcovado National Park, where you can experience one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth. This coast is home to Costa Rica’s famous Nicoya Peninsula — a haven for wellness retreats and eco-adventures.

Unwind on Gorgeous Beaches.

The Corn Island and Little Corn Island are known for pure nature and paradise beaches, and they really are. However, getting there was an adventure of a lifetime!! Check my post on How to get to Little Corn Island?

Costa Rica’s stunning coastline offers a beach for everyone, from sunbathing beauties to seasoned surfers.

La Fortuna: A Gateway to Adventure and Natural Wonders.

The town serves as the gateway to magnificent Arenal Volcano National Park and other volcano hikes in Costa Rica like Cerro Chato, which should land on your Things to Do in Costa Rica list.

La Fortuna - the best things to do in Costa Rica.

Plunge into the rejuvenating waters of the Tabacon Hot Springs or take a serene stroll through the lush gardens of the Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park. Either way, you will be satisfied with your choice.

Or, if you are looking for another type of experience, embark on an adrenaline-pumping adventure with whitewater rafting or zip-lining through the verdant rainforest canopy.

La Fortuna’s vibrant streets teem with lively restaurants, charming shops, and an array of accommodations that cater to every traveler’s needs. Whether your heart yearns for relaxation or exhilaration, La Fortuna promises an unforgettable experience that will leave you longing for more of Costa Rica’s enchanting allure. Explore the Enchanting Cloud Forests.

The great news is that there is more than just one cloud forest in Costa Rica.

For instance, the Central Highlands Cloud Forest is home to La Paz Waterfall Gardens, offering a spectacular display of enormous cascades for visitors to admire. Following this awe-inspiring experience, you can explore a wildlife showcase or delight in the captivating beauty of a butterfly sanctuary.

Soak in Natural Hot Springs.

The Arenal and Rincon de la Vieja regions boast some of the country’s most popular hot springs, ranging from luxurious, resort-style pools to more rustic, natural settings. For one, Tabacon Hot Springs, near the Arenal Volcano and the La Fortuna Waterfall, is one of the most beloved destinations there.

Besides relaxation, these thermal waters are believed to offer therapeutic benefits for various ailments. Soak your cares away and let the healing powers of nature restore your body and spirit!

Watch crocodiles in their natural environment.

The Crocodile Bridge in Costa Rica is a famous spot on the Tarcoles River, where you can observe American Crocodiles in their natural environment, sunbathing on the riverbanks. It’s located on the main highway (Highway 34) between Jaco and San Jose. While the bridge itself is free to access, there are shops, restaurants, and souvenir stalls nearby.

Learn how to make coffee!

As one of the world’s leading coffee producers, Costa Rica takes great pride in its beans and brewing techniques.

Visit a local plantation, where you can learn about the entire process, from seed to cup. Embark on guided tours through lush fields, observe traditional harvesting methods, and discover the art of roasting beans to perfection.

But the real highlight is learning how to brew the perfect cup of Costa Rican coffee yourself.
